MESSAGE OF VICE CHANCELLOR
Khyber Medical University believes in developing a multi-dimensional comprehensive health care approach encompassing all the four elements of health i.e. prevention, promotion, curative intervention and rehabilitation. We aspire to include a health care team approach at all levels of health care delivery for a comprehensive health care delivery system.
KMU identified the gaps in our health delivery system and promoted the idea of filling these gaps. Physiotherapy and physical rehabilitation is a very important component of health which has been neglected so far. Institute of Physiotherapy and rehabilitation is the pioneer institute, in this vital but uncared for field of health, in the country setting higher standards for others to emulate.
The institute is housed in a spacious building with all modern amenities- a state-of- art auditorium and learning resource centre. Emphasis has been on the provision of facilities for hands on training. Efforts are underway to make this as the most well equipped centre for physiotherapy nationally. The semester based system of education with a modern demanding goal orientated curriculum ensures high standards. The strength of the institute lies in her well qualified, trained and motivated faculty.
I welcome students for a challenging experience where they will not only be equipped with the latest concepts and modern skills but also inculcate humane values to make them a better human being.
Prof Dr. Mohammad HafizullahDirector Message
Welcome to Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Khyber Medical University. Physiotherapy is a branch of healthcare science that mainly concentrates on the physical aspects of an individual’s healthcare, by treating their physical disorders. It works towards this by maintenance and rehabilitation of the individual’s physical activity, which is nothing but bringing back the lost activity to near normal perfection. Physiotherapist uses physical agents such as mechanical energy (Exercise), heat energy (infrared radiation therapy, ultra violet radiation therapy) electrical energy (TENS, Electrical Stimulation, interferential therapy, diadymanic current), Sound energy (Ultra sonic therapy) , Electromagnetic energy (Shortwave diathermy, microwave diathermy).Throughout development of the physiotherapy profession, training and techniques have continued to change and improve. Gifted pioneers in the field have contributed richly to the profession’s literature and field organizations. Physiotherapy now commands wide recognition and well-earned respect with many young people expressing interest and making their career in the profession.
Physiotherapists can work as self employed professionals, entrepreneurs or for employer’s in the rehabilitation service system, such as hospitals, Rehabilitation centers, healthcare centers, research, private practices, or with the social services, and in the institutions that care for mentally disabled as well as the special schools for Disabled children.
Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPM&R) was established in 2009 by Khyber Medical University which offers four years (Eight Semesters) B.S program in physiotherapy. Before this students of Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa used to get admission in Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi where only four seats were allocated for the whole province. It is the first institute of physiotherapy in this province conducting graduation in physiotherapy. Our institute is well equipped with all facilities. We have enthusiastic, hardworking and sincere faculty which guide students in every aspect.
I feel proud when I see the enthusiasm in our students with a desire to excel in the field of physiotherapy. I am sure that opportunities will come their way from Pakistan and abroad to excel and prove their mettle in the area of Rehabilitation and Health Care.
Muhammad Ibrahim Farooqi Director/principal, IPM&R, KMU
Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPM&R) Khyber Medical University is the only institute in Public sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which offers Five years (Ten Semesters) graduation course in Physiotherapy (DPT).
Its existence can be correlated with the earthquake which occurred in October 2005 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and some districts of Azad Jammu & Kashmir in Pakistan and lead to mass destruction of human lives. More than seven hundred of the earthquake victim became either paraplegic or quadriplegic. This increased demand of qualified physiotherapist in the province as well as in Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
Khyber Medical University took a bold step and established IPM&R to produce qualified physiotherapist in the province. The course was started on 12th of January 2009 headed by pioneer physiotherapist of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Muhammad Ibrahim Farooqi ).
