Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Hafizullah

This is an exciting time for Khyber Medical University: we are at the threshold of revamping medical and allied health education. All four elements of health - prevention, promotion, curative intervention and rehabilitation demand similar importance to develop a comprehensive health care approach. The emphasis on health care team approach at all levels for all-inclusive health care delivery system requires preferential treatment of nursing, paramedical, allied health and public health along with medical education.

Efforts are underway to change undergraduate curriculum, that is dynamic, relevant, comprehensive and evidence and outcome based. It should accommodate healthy extracurricular, literary and cultural activities. The mode of instruction has to change from large format based teaching based to problem based learning. We have to shift to an objective and continuous system of evaluation from the antiqued annual long essay format. We need to encourage the health education continuum - under and postgraduate medical education, continuous medical education and continuous professional development with opportunities and commitment for lifelong learning. KMU has to strengthen the already existent postgraduate medical education and take initiatives in offering post postgraduate training in selected subspecialties.

Institute of Basic Medical Sciences is being established to promote and enhance the level of education in basic medical sciences,. Institute of Medical and Health education will endeavor to improve medical education, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, and Public Health. Skill development Centre will offer opportunities for learning essential skills with increasing complexities according to the demands of courses. A state of art learning resource centre will cater to quench the thirst of scholars engaged in higher pursuits.

KMU has to play a leading role in generating knowledge by stimulating and encouraging research and development. The training has to start at undergraduate and the encouragement has to continue all along. The quality assurance cell has to ensure maintenance of highest quality in whatever university chooses to do. KMU has to establish the concepts of academic audit, research audit and clinical audit at all levels.

‘Journey of Search and Research’ was an attempt to take all stake holders on board and create an opportunity to study different models of curriculum, mode of instruction and evaluation collectively. This helped us to establish bonds within institutions and with other premier institutes of the country to pave way for Institute of Basic Medical Sciences and Medical and Health education.
